Internal Family System (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on the inner workings of a person’s mind. It is based on the idea that the mind is composed of multiple sub-personalities or “parts” that each have their own unique thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. These parts can take on different roles, such as an inner critic or inner child, and may hold painful emotions like anger and shame.

The first fundamental principle of IFS is the concept of the “Self.” The Self is the core essence of a person, which is inherently good and unbreakable. The second principle is the existence of “parts.” These parts may be seen as subpersonalities or families within the mental system and each part acts with a positive intention.

IFS therapy views parts as acting out of a sense of threat or insecurity when they do not trust the Self. This can lead to extreme or unrealistic behaviors. However, when parts are able to trust the Self and feel supported, they take on positive roles, leading to a harmonious mental system.

The goal of IFS is to help clients access the Self so that they can heal their wounded parts and bring balance to their minds. It has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, substance abuse, and eating disorders. It is a non-stigmatizing approach that emphasizes the natural multiplicity of the mind and recognizes that all parts act from a positive intention. The end result of this therapy is a reduction in problematic behaviors and an increase in self-led healing.
