Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that helps people overcome symptoms and emotional distress caused by traumatic life events. Unlike traditional psychotherapy which can take years to show results, EMDR therapy has been shown to produce positive outcomes in a shorter amount of time. The therapy is based on the idea that the mind can heal from psychological trauma in a similar way that the body heals from physical trauma. When the mind is blocked by a traumatic event, it can cause intense suffering, but once the block is removed, the healing process resumes. Through EMDR therapy, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes by guiding them through a series of protocols and procedures.

EMDR therapy involves attention to three time periods:  the past, present, and future.  Focus is given to past disturbing memories and related events.  Also, it is given to current situations that cause distress, and to developing the skills and attitudes needed for positive future actions.

EMDR therapy is an eight-phase process that includes the use of eye movements or other bilateral stimulation during one part of the session. The clinician identifies the memory to be targeted and guides the client in holding different aspects of the event or thought in mind while tracking the therapist’s hand as it moves back and forth. This process leads to internal associations that allow the client to process the memory and feelings, transforming the emotional meaning of the traumatic event. Unlike traditional talk therapy, the insights gained in EMDR therapy come from the client’s own processes, leading to a sense of empowerment and resolution. The therapy does not require the client to speak in detail or do homework, and the results are a natural outcome of the therapeutic process.
